Description

Arhoolie Records was established by Chris Strachwitz as a way to record and produce music by previously obscure blues artists such as Lightnin’ Hopkins, Snooks Eaglin, and Bill Gaither. Strachwitz despised most commercial music and made it his mission to preserve and promote regional music, including blues, folk, Tejano, cajun, zydeco, and bluegrass. In this way, Arhoolie exposed the wider public to important regional music, influencing multiple generations of musicians across numerous genres. Notable artists: Lightnin’ Hopkins, Big Joe Williams, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Big Mama Thornton, and many more.
